THE POWER OF READING
The Power of Reading
I know some people on my CL kept wondering why I suddenly started the propaganda of "Reading Books". Yes! I was overwhelmed with recent experiences and changes looking back. As I reflect on my recent experiences, I am reminded of the profound impact that reading has had on my life. It's not about the number of books I've read, but about the lessons I've learned and the changes I've undergone. TBH, I felt so emotional.
I've come to realize that setting goals isn't just about finishing a book, but about applying the knowledge and insights gained from it. As an educationist, I've noticed a shift in my approach to teaching, from being theoretical to being more practical. I attribute this transformation to the books I've read, which have empowered me to navigate and teach various subjects effectively.
One particular experience that stands out was when I worked on a project called Universal Tutors with some friends. Despite being a science student, I was able to teach art and commercial students with ease. What's more, I found myself teaching accounting and commerce more effectively than even the science courses! The students were impressed, and I was surprised by my own ability to break down complex concepts into simple, understandable and more practical terms.
I recall spending countless hours in my professor's office and lab with Kayode and about 6 regular others, where he encouraged us to read books from his mini library. He would often point to his bookshelves, saying, "Read, my library is always open as long as you would not damage anything!." he would say jokingly. I took his advice to heart, even though I was to read academic articles and books strictly. I couldn't resist the non-academics. I managed to digest three to five books, including "The Cash Flow Quadrant," "Rich Dad, Poor Dad," and "How to Be a Gentleman." These books not only broadened my knowledge about finances but also instilled in me a sense of personal and financial purpose.
To add to this piece, taking notes whilst reading improves your writing skills, listening skills, how fast you assimilate and disseminate information and pen down your thoughts.
As I look back, I am reminded that knowledge is indeed divine, but it requires action and hard work to yield results. I pray that Allah grants us the strength to continue learning, growing, and applying the lessons we've learned.
So, let us not just read books, but let us also reflect on the lessons they teach us. Let us apply the knowledge we gain to make a positive impact in our lives and the lives of others. For it is in the application of knowledge that we truly grow, transform and make effective decisions.
