Extravagance and Convocation Ceremony Of OAU Students by Mutohhir Abdulhamid Olanrewaju




Islam is a complete religion, you will always find what you need in our religion, I was so amazed when I got to where Allah talks about Extravagance in the Qur'an. 


Immediately, I read this verse, i checked the tafseer of the verse.
       Today that OAU students are convocating, I think it's important for me as an upcoming scholar to pen something down about this in order for fellow undergraduates to benefit from it.

If you ruminate deeply about Q7:31, 
Allah says in the last miracle that was sent to Prophet Muhammad sallahu alayhi was-Salam, you will see that our Uncreated Creator commanded us to prohibit Extravagance.
"O children of Adam! attend to your embellishments at every time of prayer, and eat and drink and be not extravagant; surely He does not love the extravagant." ( Q7:31 )

In tafseer Ibnu Katheer, the statement where Allah says
"And eat and drink but waste not by extravagance," lmam bukhori said that ibnu Abbas said, 
 "Eat what you wish and wear what you wish, as 
long as you avoid two things: extravagance and 
arrogance.''   


Ibn Jarir said that Muhammad bin Abdul-A`la narrated to 
us that Muhammad bin Thawr narrated to us from 
Ma`mar from Ibn Tawus from his father who said that
Ibn Abbas said, 
"Allah has allowed eating and drinking, as long as 
it does not contain extravagance or arrogance.'' 
This chain is Sahih. 
Imam Ahmad recorded that Al-Miqdam bin Ma`dikarib 
Al-Kindi said that he heard the Messenger of Allah 
saying, 

"The Son of Adam will not fill a pot worse for himself than his stomach. It is enough for the Son of Adam to eat a few bites that strengthens his spine. If he likes to have more, then let him fill a 
third with food, a third with drink and leave a third for his breathing. 
An-Nasa'i and At-Tirmidhi collected this Hadith, 
At-Tirmidhi said, "Hasan'' or "Hasan Sahih'' 
according to another manuscript."


To my fellow undergraduates, let's try as much as possible to follow the commandment of Allah. 

Fear Allah in all your endeavors,

Do not eat too much,

Do not drink too much,

Do not waste food today,

Remember your friends as you are collecting convocation food,

Remember students who cannot afford these luxuries 

Collect food for them too.

Once again, the mantle of leadership has been passed on. Alhamdulillah Rabbil Alamin. We give praise and thanks to Almighty Allah for making us witness that day. We thank Him for guiding the Shurah committee, and we thank Him for His choice of leaders. For those of us who attended the programme, we would all agree that that day is a memorable one. It's not every day you see your leaders breaking down at the moment of appointment. And if there's a lesson to be learnt from that, and from the fact that Great men like Umar and Uthman cried as well, it's the fact that crying is not always a sign of weakness.
