EPISODE 1: The Spread Of Islam In West Africa by Mutohhir Abdulhamid Olanrewaju
Islam is defined as a religion of peace. It's said to be a religion ordained by Allah for all humanity. It also means the submission to the will and commandments.
It's therefore a universal religion, designed for humanity without regards for race,tribe,or geography. The spread of Islam began during the time of Prophet Muhammad. After his death, his companion took up the cause of spreading Islam.
The earliest contact between Islam and Africa began during the life time of the Prophet Muhammad, when he taught the oneness of God and abolition of the priestly class of the Qurayshites.
The Prophet's followers were persecuted, and in response he advised them to migrate to a different part of the world for refuge. In 615 CE, a group of early Muslims fled to Abyssinia, a region that is today known as Ethiopia. There, they were taken in by King Negus, a Christian ruler. This event demonstrates that the first place of refuge for early Muslims.
The significance of this event is that the first refuge of the early Muslims was in a region of Africa, and they were taken in by an African ruler who protected them. This shows that the early Muslims had a strong relationship with Africa from the beginning of the faith.
