Who Is Your Mentor By Mutohhir Abdulhamid Olanrewaju

Peace be upon all those who are reading this article. It's crucial to ponder deeply before choosing a mentor or, if you haven't yet decided to have one, this article can provide valuable insights.

Why do you need a mentor?

A mentor is indispensable for anyone aspiring to succeed in this world and the hereafter. In the past, our forefathers couldn't make significant decisions without the guidance of their mentors. This holds true not only in Islam but in all aspects of life, especially for those seeking success. Mentors can be your parents, spouse, children, teachers, or even historical figures, depending on your circumstances.

Life can be challenging to navigate if you don't want to rush through it. Unfortunately, many youths today lack this perspective, and it's affecting various aspects of their lives. Remember that when people care about you, they'll offer plenty of advice, but you need to reflect deeply and pray for divine guidance to choose the right path. Some mentors can inadvertently cause psychological damage, which can later have a detrimental impact on your life.

According to Google:

Mentors provide guidance, advice, feedback, and support to mentees, serving variously as role models, teachers, counselors, advisors, sponsors, advocates, and allies, depending on the specific goals and objectives negotiated with the mentee.

While Google's definition is accurate, for a Muslim with ambitious aspirations for this life and the hereafter, ten indispensable characteristics are needed in a mentor:

Strong physique: A mentor should prioritize physical health, exercise regularly, and maintain regular check-ups.

Good character: Honesty, keeping promises, a cheerful disposition, and generosity are essential traits.

Cultured awareness: A mentor should stay informed about local and international affairs.

Correct beliefs: It's crucial to seek a mentor who shares your faith values, especially in a world where influential figures can be found on social media.

True worship: Correct beliefs must be accompanied by sincere worship and practice.

Self-sufficiency: A mentor should be financially independent, not reliant on charity.

Organized: Being organized in personal affairs is essential to avoid wasting time.

Time-conscious: Recognize that time is invaluable; it's more precious than money.

Self-discipline: A mentor should be actively working against their own negative impulses.

Altruism: A mentor must be willing to help others, showing they are worthy of being a mentor.

These characteristics are comprehensive and crucial in selecting an ideal mentor. In the future, I'll elaborate on each of these points further, In Sha Allah.

Thank you,
